Dear Friends and Community,
I am getting to this a day early as it comes with an important reminder about this Friday, Feb 28, being a national economic blackout day. That means we collectively will use our power to not put more of our money into the pockets of those who are in the presidents pocket. This may be our biggest collective power so it will important to be aware of this type of strategy when it comes around periodically.
I have begun to hear the Mourning Dove again. And I am beginning to realize that I am not the only one still with Christmas decorations still up. Ours went up late due to Nick getting sick. Incrementally I would put them up,as I found the time. It felt like an act of courage, given the circumstances of our December. In some way I was committed to joy and the spirit of the season. I literally put up our wreaths on Christmas day. And they are still up. I still have our lights up in the window, our Snowman on our lawn, and a string of lights yet in the dining room. I am unsure why and I think I want to feel it is due to such a different season for us. But it is not just us. I am still seeing bits and pieces of Christmas around.
I saw a Christmas tree just yesterday on the sidewalk waiting to be taken away, and at a relatives there were remnants of Christmas still present, even a little tree still up, and few Santa’s as well. On the way home there were still lawn Deer and Santa’s, tree lights and wreaths. And I wondered what is it about this year that keeps us holding on to Christmas past. And I think there is some comfort in it, because we are in mourning for our country, over the ugliness we are witnessing, and I think we are realizing the very deep trouble we are in.
I will post the weeks schedule and events and then I will just pass along Chapter 17 of Reality, a book by Peter Kingsley that hits the nail on the head in every chapter, but this was the one I read yesterday…and its truth just begs sharing.

REALITY/ Chapter 17…
It is essentially a book about the purity we have missed through centuries and civilizations that would have made us wiser for these times. It will be hard for us to catch up, only because we do not want to. Perhaps the shock of these times will work on us. Perhaps we might change our minds. That is our only hope.
The time period is the late 6th century BCE.
” For someone to say people in general know nothing, are dead, blind, live their whole lives in a daze is bad enough. To say we are all dead and in some kind of living purgatory is even worse.
There is hardly a scenario that could seem bleaker. And quite apart from the bleakness, for anyone to say such things could seem an extraordinary arrogance.
But perhaps this is to misread the situation completely. Maybe the only real arrogance is ours ~ the collective arrogance of insisting that life in the ways we seem to live it is all there is to existence, then accusing anyone who knows otherwise of being arrogant.
And if we start to look more closely at the bleakness in this picture Parmenides presents, we will begin to notice that the utter futility he is confronting us with is just something we have to accept as part of his bitter gift. The gift is bitter because it means having to acknowledge some unpleasant truths about ourselves. And yet it’s a gift because of the mysterious promise it contains: the promise of far more than we could ever conceive or imagine.
Eventually a time comes when there are no alternatives to laying all the cards on the table and being quite honest. We have to face the situation as it is, admit its hopelessness, because only then is there any possibility of being able to move beyond it.
That we know nothing about ourselves; that all our imagined knowledge only tends to blind us even more, is demonstrably true. As for our being dead: this is not just a poetic metaphor, or the expression of a personal opinion. It’s the simple statement of a truth we can all discover for ourselves at one time or another ~ not a question of guesswork or theory but a matter of knowledge and experience.
And the gloominess is only an appearance.Of course we all have our moments of beauty and wonder and joy; but it’s no pessimism to say these passing moments are nothing but the fragmented reflection, viewed in a distorting mirror, of a reality that’s far richer and vaster. All our longing is secretly focused on that vastness, waiting for it, expecting it, breathing for something that’s already available to us but so untouchable because we keep reaching out for other things instead ~ always settling for little things, for second best.
The greatest possible pessimism is the one each of us shares when we take at face value this ridiculous world we have manged to construct for ourselves; is when we imagine that soon we are going to die and that is that.
We can cite as many reasoned arguments as we want. But in our hearts none of us believe we only live for thirty, or fifty, or eighty years, because we all know there is more to us without even understanding how we know. And this is the knowledge
Parmenides was working to bring to life, in our minds as well as hearts.
Without it, all the beauty and the wonder that we are able to experience are nothing. They are a film being shown to prisoners, hovering between existence and non-existence, as they wait to be executed on death row”.
Chapter 17 ~ REALITY ~ Peter Kingsley
This is a book of shocks for any one of us…for all of us. Chapters are mostly short yet loaded with truth that finds us like a bullseye. We all can learn what is possible for us to know. And we are at the crossroads of having to know more, and be more.
So again, this Friday, the 28th is an economic blackout day. That means we are not buying off Amazon on Friday or any store in the pockets of this administration. Try not to use your credit cards. If you need gas for the weekend, get it tomorrow. Shop locally if you must shop at all. This is something we all can do for a day that will impact a system that depends on us. We the people, do have the power. This is not a time to be be idle, and this action sure seems doable if we want to do something.
Peace and blessings,
Denise Yocco
