Dear Friends and Community,
Sending blessings into this mail, offering love and healing to come to all of us in all the ways we want an need it to. We all have things in our life that we wish we were not dealing with and working through, and worrying about. And we also know this is the story about the thorn and the rose. So we will always, in some way, at some time, be working through the thorns, while every now and again, be catching the fragrance of the rose.
Today I relished the fragrance of the rose. Not because anything was solved, or changed yet for the better, but because of what is possible for us, for any one us. And while I will say that, I as much offer that sentiment here often, and in every class I offer, I got to hear from a couple of my favorite people; Michelle and Barack Obama, as I watched the opening program for the Obama Presidential Center. If you also watched it, you know what I heard. I heard Glory. And I want to share more about that.
I have a story here to tell, so I am going to get to the schedule first, and offer some ideas for getting together,to sit and talk and play and create together. We are going through a time in this country and it will serve our hearts and souls well to gather together beyond and in addition to the protest, to listen to each other, and laugh and cry together, and find our knowing and strength together, to realize our joy and our grace together. To gather together our wits to outwit our fears, and take our power back so we can stand strong together against the last storms of this shameful time.

Glory…
The first time I voted it was against Nixon. He won, and I might have never voted again if not for Barack Obama. I became seriously turned off by politics. Still am. In 1985 I became a Jehovah’s Witness, and they didn’t vote. So I never gave it much thought. I observed the world and the country through a restrictive religious lens. The beauty of it was it had been my choice. I never count it as a mistake, as it was a part of my journey that has led me to where I am today. In 2008 I was still a Witness, and while I wanted to vote for Obama, I didn’t. I was conflicted. Something was changing though. Between 2008 and 2012 I had transitioned away from the religion. So I was able to join the campaign to re-elect Barack Obama.
He was always “glory” to me. There was something very a-political about him. He was intelligent and there was the hint of the divine showing. He was a human being, and so was Michelle. Real people, radiant with brilliance and purpose, wanting to share a vision of hope and inclusivity with the world. My heart has always been with them.
Our country was ready for them, people were ready, but the ugly underbelly of our government made sure he would not hinder their plans. Belly up and we all were witness to the game of obstruction. And we saw a man, a real president, stay cool and decent, brilliant and joyful, truthful, with grace and glory.
Michelle, called his time in office a crucible. Where he was not hardened by the fire. Not burnt or spent by it. But like in alchemy, Barack Obama was refined by it. Made stronger for it. Held by grace and a divine glory, he took care of us, all of us, despite all the efforts to deny him.
Had we not got so tangled up in the politics, had we paid more attention to the grace and glory, to the goodness, and demeanor,to the integrity, responsibility, soundness of mind and being truthful, perhaps we might not have twice elected a fear mongering grifter to the presidency.
The Obama’s continue to shine. They live and thrive in their service to all people, especially the young among us. They continue to speak truth to us. Michelle said we have to choose democracy, or it can and will go away. We have to choose to meet this time and moment. We do not have the luxury of time with all the actions being taken to upend the mid-term elections.
I have said here before that the only hope left is the hope of hope rising in us. I think Obama said in some way, that this hope is not something impossible or some corny and uncool thing. It is not old-fashioned. It is our ability to bring to life our dreams, to make realities out of our choices. To not think like that, he said, is to give our power away. “People have the power to dream, to rule, to wrestle the world from fools”. Patti Smith
We, the people, are now 10 years in this crucible, this furnace that has allowed many of us to feel the arc of history has bent the wrong way, towards injustice. The story is not over, the history has not been written. The greatest injustice will be to relinquish our power to experience anything less than the divine glory of being who we are, and the Love that will get us there.
The Presidential Center looks amazing and of course I want to see it. I would expect nothing less from them but to co-create such superb excellence to share with the world and to lift us up at the same time. To fill us, to nourish us. To offer 19 acres to roam and play in. Amazing grace and humble glory.
I am sure the program for the next two days will be equally amazing. I hope you can catch some of it…if not all.
Happy Father’s Day to all you dear dads.
Peace and blessings,
Denise Yocco
